From cell phones, to laptops, to electric vehicles - Lithium Ion batteries are fast becoming mainstream. The downside of Lithium are the extra costs, but for off-grid and backup systems their advantages are many. They have extraordinary abilities to cycle repeatedly with little effect on life - up to 10,000 cycles to 80% DOD. Also, they can be deeply discharged each cycle, and can be recharged or discharged at high rates (up to C/2 rates). Lithium batteries can also be left discharged without damage - even at 50%. Faster charging means reduced generator run time. System designs can utilize much smaller capacities than lead-acid batteries, since depth of discharge is of less concern. Typical Lithium banks might be half the size of Lead-Acid in a comparable system. And Lithium is of course maintenance free, with no gassing or watering. Current charge controllers and inverters are Lithium ready.
